How many people think of downsizing when they have a kids in the house? Well, that’s we are.
We have a three-plus bedroom house with a mostly finished basement and 2.5 baths. But there’s just three of us. Well, four if you count the Dutch bunny. So we’re looking at about 1750 square feet of space plus an oversized one-car garage and a three-season porch attached to the garage. It’s the only house we’ve ever lived in as a married couple.
But there is space we don’t use. And I don’t want to buy things to fill it.
Then there’s the question of schools. A lot of my kid’s friends will be going to a different school district for high school. They either live their now or their parents are selling their homes in Madison and looking for a place in Monona or Cottage Grove.
Anyway…that’s where we are at right now. Is it a good time in the near future to downsize? We’re even thinking very seriously of a condo. Because I enjoy gardening–when others do it, that is.
People are stopping me in the halls to talk about China. Or emailing me. One person asked me to bring her back a silk scarf. Huh.
We are limiting ourselves to two 21-inch bags and a larger hardside one that is probably no more than 26 inches. If it weren’t for all of the gifts we are supposed to bring it would be a little less challenging.
I’ve asked our tour guide if I can make an appointment to see the China Centre for Children’s Welfare and Adoption while we are in Beijing. I’m sure that’s making me a big pain. I doubt this will happen.

On the left, items for gifts. Yes, fancy deodorant is appreciated and loved as a thoughtful gift. I bought ten bottles for the nannies in various fragrances. It’s something that is hard to get where we are going. To the right, an arsenal to prepare for any possible owies, illnesses, etc.
A blog worth following if you can be open to it.
Many things the foster family for Jossie wrote us I feel we need to keep private. But this will let you know how important connecting with them is. I cannot imagine. If they can meet with us, it will mean so much. This is from a letter they wrote us a few years back.
“We are imaging what will little Jocelyn be looking like ten years
later. How beautiful would that be? And that will be your moment
of harvest as well because it represents your profound love and
meticulous care. We shall all see that happen one day, shan’t we?
“What a great pleasure to write to you! We are so glad to be your
friends. May be it is because of God who grants the friendship for
us. May be it is Jocelyn. She is like a bridge between you and us,
and she proves that love is everywhere.
